The separation between sites is about average for a state park campground, but most sites are pretty well screened by vegetation. The campground is well away from Highway 101, so there’s very little traffic noise, just the occasional whoosh of a car driving by on Drury Parkway. No other campground has such a large number of world-class redwood hikes within walking distance. But it’s just a few minutes’ walk from Prairie Creek’s visitor center and the main trailhead with its incomparable selection of old-growth redwood trails.
The campground itself doesn’t have any old-growth redwoods most sites are in the shade of leafy hardwood trees just outside the old-growth forest. BEWARE: Currents can carry tubes downstream very quickly! Water/Flow LevelBuilt in the 1930s when the park was first opened, Elk Prairie has a pleasant, woodsy small-campground feel and central location that you don’t get in newer campgrounds. Tubing, wading and water play off the gravel bar on the Elk Creek. Water flow in creeks and rivers fluctuate with seasons, rainfall and snow pack. Do not park in front of gates or partially obstruct a fire road. When parking overnight or for extended periods at trailheads always secure all food, packaging and ice chests in the trunk of your vehicle. No wilderness permits are required for the Marble Mountain Wilderness but, hikers heading north or south on the PCT may need to acquire wilderness permits in advance for other sections of the PCT. This trail also connects with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). For a longer trip, hikers can continue up Elk creek all the way to the Marble Mountain Wilderness or go east at the Kelsey National Recreation Trail to Bear Lake.
